Cut My Teeth 03:02
We're looking for a do-over We're looking for a chance to shine I'm tired of holding steady And there's got to be a better place than mine A place in time We're looking back to the 60s We're wearing our parents clothes We're drawing out new maps But traveling those same old roads That no one knows I'm so tired of being strung together, man But I guess that's just how it goes We're looking for an adventure Looking for a chance to kick off the sheets Start me at the bottom 'Cause I need somewhere where I can cut my teeth Cut my teeth I'm so tired of being strung together, man But I guess that's just what I need

Ontario Wind, come take me away Keep a cool watch on my mother My lungs are aching I can barely keep my breath But I pull the thin air out and in Speak all ye angels Don't let the sun go down Young lions have been seeking fame Tie me to the wheel Keep my head straight I want to rot it out in heaven I want to feel the national call I want to feel the national call I want to feel the national call I want to live above it all Headwaters come and drown me away Carry me down the Credit River I'm getting stagnant from standing in one place Ontario Winds call my name I want to feel the national call I want to feel the national call I want to feel the national call I want to live above it all

about

“We’re looking for a do-over, we’re looking for a chance to shine,” goes the first line of Navy Skies’single “Cut My Teeth.” It couldn’t be more fitting of a line for this Toronto punk-rock band.

Formerly known as Rebel Rebel, the band found that their previous EP was overproduced and wasn’t anything like the live show that so many people found compelling about them. For the Cut My Teeth 7″ the band, now known as Navy Skies, worked with Peter van Helvoort of Teenage Kicks and decided to be a little more DIY, recording everything except the vocals live off the floor.

The result is two great tracks available for free from Bandcamp.

“Cut My Teeth” is filled with anthemic guitars and passionate vocals from Travis Caine, Kara Gauthier and Bryan Wyshnicki, with Paul Cope keeping them in line with his drums. One can really feel the band sonically carving their place in Toronto’s rock scene.

The other side, “Ontario Winds,” is an uptempo tribute to the band’s home province. The more controlled guitars in this song captures well the anxious tension in Caine’s vocals.
